Zillow Grows More Than 50% In 2009

by admin on January 5, 2010

Real estate website Zillow.com said today it broke multiple records for site traffic and user activity in 2009.

An average of 8.2 million unique users visited Zillow each month during 2009, which is an increase of 57 percent year-over-year.

"2009 was a wild year for real estate, with continued home value declines, government intervention, record low mortgage rates, and an enormous amount of consumer uncertainty about what the future holds," said Spencer Rascoff, Zillow's chief operating officer.

Spencer-Rascoff "As a result, people flocked to Zillow for information and advice. Uncertainty always benefits information providers, and 2009 was the year that Zillow solidified its place as a clear leader in providing millions of people with real estate information."

Other highlights include:

  • 37 percent year-over-year growth in page views
  • 3.9 million for-sale, rental and Make Me Move listings are posted on Zillow currently, up 43 percent-year-over-year.
  • The Zillow iPhone App has proved to be popular with more than 870,000 downloads since its launch in April 2009. Over 2 million homes are viewed on the app each month.
  • 171 U.S. newspapers began using Zillow's search and listings technology to power their real estate websites in 2009.

"It's clear to us that more and more people want Zillow's real estate information on location, while touring neighborhoods and homes, and we expect this trend to magnify in 2010," Rascoff said.

Hitwise: Facebook Beat Google On New Year’s Day

by admin on January 4, 2010

As Facebook employees went back to work this week, they may have been smiling more (or at least less frowning less) than most other people returning from vacation.  Their site performed admirably over the holidays, actually attracting record-breaking amounts of traffic.

On Tuesday, we documented the fact that Facebook received more traffic than Google on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  That made it the most visited U.S. site for the first time ever.

This afternoon, Hitwise's Bill Tancer provided some more data.  He wrote, "Facebook was able, albeit by a slighter margin, to recapture the #1 position on Friday, New Year's Day."  Tancer also created the graph you see below.

Obviously, it doesn't look like Facebook's destined to attract more individuals than Google on a permanent basis.  Still, the social network's done quite well over the last couple of weeks, closing the gap that somehow opened up during the first half of December.

This repeat occurrence of Facebook beating Google on a holiday also creates the question of how often it'll do so in the future.  Will a switcheroo occur on Valentine's Day?  St. Patrick's Day?  No Housework Day?  We'll see.

Google Analytics Gets a Bunch of New Features

by admin on October 21, 2009

Google announced a number of new and upcoming features for Google Analytics today. The features, Google says, focus on three things: power, flexibility, and intelligence.

It is the intelligence aspect, which Google places the most prominence on, and this comes in the form of a feature called "Analytics Intelligence," which will provide users with automatic alerts of significant changes in the data patterns of their site metrics and dimensions over daily, weekly, and monthly periods. Users can be notified by email or right within the Google Analytics user interface.

Google has also added goals for "time on site" and "pages per visit," as well as the ability to define up to 20 goals per profile. Here's some more on that:

Google Analytics now tracks mobile websites and mobile apps so you can better measure your mobile marketing efforts. They will be adding a code snippet for users to add to their mobile sites. PHP, Perl, JSP, and ASPX sites will be supported.

"iPhone and Android mobile application developers can now also track how users engage with apps, just as with tracking engagement on a website," says Dai Pham of the Google Analytics Team. "What's more, for apps on Android devices, usage can be tied back to ad campaigns: from ad to marketplace to download to engagement."

They have also added Advanced Table Filtering, which allows you to filter the rows in a table based on different metric conditions. Here's more on that feature:

Now when you create a Custom Report, you can select Unique Visitors as a metric against any dimensions in Google Analytics, and they are also adding multiple custom variables to the tracking API and making it easy to share Custom Reports and Advanced Segments.

Google says that it will be going into more detail on the new features in the coming days on the Google Analytics Blog. The features will be appearing in Google Analytics accounts gradually over the coming weeks.
